Martin started playing cricket as a wicketkeeper-batsman in the early 1960s in the Mornington Peninsula Association in country Victoria, and then in far north Queensland and Papua New Guinea. He arrived in Hobart for the first time in 1972 and played at Grade level for New Town in the Tasmanian Cricket Association, then in the 1980s in the then Channel Cricket Association. Since taking up umpiring he has, in addition to appointments in Hobart, stood in a total of 52 games in Alice Springs, England, Singapore and Hong Kong, the latter three during private visits overseas. Outside the TCUSA he edits the internet newsletter 'Playing the Game' for umpires and scorers.
